Abstract

This research study, titled By the Numbers: A Strategy in Teaching/Learning Mathematics, sought to investigate the efficacy of the “By the Numbers” instructional strategy in enhancing mathematics teaching and learning among primary school children. The study aimed to determine whether the “By the Numbers” strategy for teaching and learning mathematics would increase understanding of mathematical concepts, raise classroom engagement, and, subsequently, improve general academic achievement in mathematics among primary school pupils. A quantitative research method was used.

The sample consisted of primary school pupils and data was collected through classroom test, observations and other data-gathering tools used in the research to determine pupil’s mathematical performance prior and post implementation of “By the Numbers” strategy.

Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistical procedures to determine any shift in the student achievement and engagement. Result from the study indicated that “By the Numbers” strategy helps pupils increase their understanding of mathematical concepts, have a greater confidence in solving mathematical problems, and actively engaged in their classroom math lessons. Consequently, it has the potential to be a valuable tool for effective mathematics teaching and learning practices in the primary school classroom. Recommendation from the study stated that teachers ought to include the “By the Numbers” instructional strategy in their everyday mathematics classes and provide professional development and training so as to help them implement this method with ease and success.

It also recommended that this particular topic can be further researched with larger samples, in diverse populations so as to be able to further affirm the results of the current study.
